Electrifying district heating shifts the bottleneck from heat production to the power grid. Heat pumps and electric boilers cane raise connection capacity requirements at the points where reinforcement is slowest and most expensive. Thermal energy storage helps decouples electricity draw from heat delivery, offering flexibility that can defer or displace grid investment. But how do we find, show, optimize and capture these values?
In this first seminar in DaCES series of seminar on Thermal Energy Storage, we examines TES from system value down to the hydraulics of decentral integration, w. Dansk Fjernvarme covering the Danish build out from their recent analyses and NIRAS\Toke presenting insights from their PhD w. novel cases from Aalborg and Stanford where the role of TES is shifting.
In our next webinar we will dive further into the grid expansion challenges with further expert input from NIRAS w. cases on datacenters, cold storage and incentive/market design.

Datacenters are scaling faster than the grid can absorb them, making connection capacity a hard constraint. With most of the datacenter load becoming heat, there are large opportunities for utilizing this for district heating and furhter valorize it with thermal energy storages – but to enable flexible operations we need to target the energy supply. With 30–40% of datacenter loads being cooling-related, there can be great opportunities for making this load flexible with cold storages – or increase the utilization of the UPS/BESS system. But the right set of solutions hinges on the placement, desing of the cooling system – and the larger long term plans for the energy system. But for to scale we need to move beyond just the technical solution and also discuss the right incentive and market design.
In this seminar we dive deeper into the grid challenges and how TES can enable a more sustainable integration of datacenters.
